How we use cookies

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer or mobile device (e.g. mobile phone) by the web- server that sends the pages of a website to your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari).

Cookies contain only very limited and simple information such as numbers, digits, the name of the website and a unique lineIdentifier (to lineIdentify the cookie and not the user) and are unique to your browser. It does not contain information that can be used to lineIdentify you personally.

Why use cookies?

Cookies are generally used to remember things about your previous visits to the website that set the cookie.

Are there different types of cookie?

Cookies can be characterised by their “lifetime” and their “party type”.

The lifetime of a cookie is how long it will exist on your computer.

The party type of a cookie refers to the origin of the computer code that set the cookie.

Cookie lifetime

There are two types of cookie lifetime: “session” and “persistent”.

Session cookies last only for the duration of time that your browser is open. They are created when you arrive at a website, and are deleted when you close the web-browser.

Persistent cookies last beyond the duration of your visit and are not deleted when you close your browser. They're usually used to remember your preferences regarding the way a website is set up, or by analytics code that, for example, detects if it's your first visit to the website.

Party type

There are two kinds of party type: “First Party” and “Third Party”

First party cookies are cookies that are created in your browser by code that is part of the website you're visiting.

Third party cookies are set by code that is not directly a part of the website and is instead set by another organisation such as those employed for the purposes of monitoring the traffic visiting the website.
